RIVOTRIL 2 mg (clonazepam) Brand is used to treat various different forms of epilepsy, including absence seizures (petit mal epilepsy), generalised tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal epilepsy), partial seizures and myoclonic seizures.
Rivotril belongs to a group of medicines called benzodiazepines. They are thought to work by their action on brain chemicals.
Rivotril should not be used in:
- Patients in a coma.
-People who are known to be abusing pharmaceuticals, drugs or alcohol.
- People with a condition involving abnormal muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis).
- People with severe breathing problems or a sudden worsening of any underlying lung disease (acute pulmonary insufficiency).
- People with a syndrome where breathing stops for short spells during sleep (sleep apnoea syndrome).
- People with severely decreased liver function.
- People who are allergic to any other medicine in the benzodiazepine family, eg diazepam, temazepam.
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
Possible side effects of Rivotril:
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Like other medicines, Rivotril can cause side effects. Some of the more common side effects of Rivotril include: anxiety, increased heart rate, tremor, general unwell feeling, behavior problems, drowsiness, lack of muscular coordination, an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat), hallucinations or severe confusion, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
How to take Rivotril:
Rivotril comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken three times a day and may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Rivotril exactly as directed. Rivotril can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or for a longer time than your doctor tells you to. Tolerance may develop with long-term or excessive use, making the drug less effective. This medication must be taken regularly to be effective. Do not skip doses even if you feel that you do not need them. Do not take Rivotril for more than 4 months or stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor. Stopping the drug suddenly can worsen your condition and cause withdrawal symptoms (anxiousness, sleeplessness, and irritability). Your doctor probably will decrease your dose gradually.
How to store Rivotril:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep the medication away from the children.
