What is Zopiclone used for?
Zopiclone is a drug that is used for the treatment of insomnia and other sleeping disorders. It reduces the amount of time needed to get to sleep and eliminates nocturnal awakenings throughout the night. It is also an effective sedative with muscle-relaxing properties. Zopiclone should ideally only be used short term to avoid issues with dependence or withdrawal symptoms – ideally for 4 weeks or less. Zopiclone is sold under various different brand names which include Zimovane, Datolan and Imovane.
What you need to know before taking Zopiclone?
Under certain circumstances, caution should be taken before taking zopiclone to treat insomnia. Also, under some circumstances, zopiclone may not be suitable for you at all. You are advised to inform your doctor if:
- suffering from liver or kidney problems
- you suffer from myasthenia gravis (this is a nerve disorder causing muscle weakness)
- elderly
- you have abused alcohol or drugs in the past
- suffering from sleep apnea
- you have a personality disorder
- suffering from depression
- sensitive or allergic to any ingredient contained in zopiclone
- experiencing breathing problems
- planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding

Correct Usage of Zimovane
Zopiclone is an oral medication that should be taken just before bedtime, and should only be taken for a maximum of four weeks at a time. Taking zopiclone for any longer than this may cause a tolerance to build up, and it will no longer be effective in treating insomnia. It is important that those taking zopiclone do not increase their dosage without the advice of a doctor.
Side effects of this drug
There are some side effects that may be noticed when taking zopiclone, including dry mouth, headache and upset stomach. Other side effects include:
Irritability
- Depression
- Loss of memory
- Confusion
- Slurred speech
Most of these side effects will disappear within a few days of taking zopiclone. There is a risk of Zopiclone addiction and withdraw. Anyone taking zopiclone who notices that these side effects are lingering, or the presence of any other side effect, should consult their doctor, who may change the dosage, or even recommend another type of sleep medication.
Generally, elderly persons are more sensitive to the effects of zopiclone, and therefore it is advisable to contact your doctor if you experience sleeping difficulties after stopping this medication.
